It started appearing everywhere because you started noticing it, not because it started happening. The effect has a name in cognitive science, the frequency illusion, and it is produced by two well-documented mechanisms running at the same time: selective attention and confirmation bias. The world did not change. The filter you carry through it did.
This distinction is worth being precise about, because the frequency illusion is the raw material for an enormous amount of content claiming you are manifesting, aligning, or tuning into something. The experience those posts describe is genuine. The explanation is not.
Where the two names came from
The popular name, the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon, has no academic origin at all. It traces to a 1994 comment on a Minnesota newspaper's online discussion board, where a reader described hearing about the West German militant group Baader-Meinhof twice within a day after a lifetime of never hearing of them. Other readers recognized the experience, the name stuck, and it has been circulating ever since. It is a nickname, not a finding.
The technical term arrived in 2005, when Stanford linguist Arnold Zwicky coined "frequency illusion" in a post on Language Log. Zwicky was writing about a specific professional annoyance: people notice a word or a grammatical construction, conclude it is new or spreading rapidly, and complain about it, when in fact they simply started paying attention. He paired it with a companion term, the recency illusion, for the belief that a thing you just noticed must be recent. The frequency illusion outgrew linguistics, and the Oxford English Dictionary has since added it.
The two mechanisms behind it
Neither one is exotic. Both are among the most heavily studied processes in cognitive psychology, and the frequency illusion is what you get when they run in sequence.
Selective attention
Your senses take in vastly more than you consciously process. Attention is the allocation policy that decides what gets through, and it is not passive.
Corbetta and Shulman's 2002 review in Nature Reviews Neuroscience described two partially separate networks doing this work. A dorsal system, including intraparietal and superior frontal cortex, prepares and applies goal-directed selection: it biases perception toward what you are currently looking for. A ventral system, including temporoparietal and inferior frontal cortex and largely lateralized to the right hemisphere, detects stimuli that are behaviorally relevant, especially when they are salient or unexpected. The ventral network effectively interrupts the dorsal one when something important shows up.
Learning a new thing does two things to this arrangement. It creates a category that the goal-directed system can now prioritize, and it makes instances of that category salient enough to trip the detection system. The green car model you just learned about was driving past you last month. It did not register, because nothing in your attentional machinery had a reason to flag it. Now it does.
Confirmation bias
Attention explains why you start noticing. It does not explain why it feels like a surge. That second half is confirmation bias, which Raymond Nickerson defined in his 1998 review in Review of General Psychology as the seeking or interpreting of evidence in ways partial to an existing belief or hypothesis.
Once you have formed the hypothesis "this is suddenly everywhere," every subsequent sighting arrives as confirming evidence and gets stored. The vastly larger number of non-sightings is not stored at all, because an absence is not an event. You have a running tally of hits and no tally whatsoever of misses. The ratio you feel is not the ratio that exists, and it cannot be, because half the data was never recorded. The 4 steps, in order
- First exposure creates the category. Before you knew the word, the concept, or the car model, there was nothing for attention to select for. The instances were arriving and being discarded before consciousness.
- Attention re-prioritizes. The new category becomes a goal-relevant target for top-down selection and a salient event for bottom-up detection. Both networks now flag it.
- Each hit is consciously registered and stored. Novelty makes early instances especially memorable, which inflates their weight in recall.
- The misses are never counted. No mental note is made of the four hundred cars that were not the one, or the thousand sentences that did not contain the word. The denominator is missing.
What this is not evidence of
The frequency illusion is a perceptual bias. It tells you something true about how your attention was reallocated. It tells you nothing about whether the base rate of anything in the world changed.
That matters because the illusion is regularly presented as proof of something else: that writing a goal down causes opportunities to appear, that the universe responds to intention, that noticing a repeated number means something is being arranged on your behalf. In each case, the persuasive force comes from a real experience being handed a false cause. You genuinely did start seeing more. You did not start seeing more because the world produced more.
The most common pseudo-mechanism bolted onto this experience is the reticular activating system, which gets described online as a brain filter that shows you your goals. That is not what the structure does, and the gap between the real anatomy and the internet version is large enough that we gave it its own post on what the RAS actually does.
There is something real and modest in the neighborhood, worth stating plainly so the correction does not overshoot. Goals genuinely do bias attention, and that bias genuinely can change behavior, because you act on what you notice. Noticing more coworking spaces after deciding to freelance is a real advantage. It is just not evidence that more coworking spaces exist.
An honest note on the evidence
The two component mechanisms have enormous experimental literatures. The compound effect has a much thinner one. The frequency illusion is best described as a well-motivated account built from two heavily studied parts, rather than a heavily quantified phenomenon in its own right. Attempts to measure it directly, including a 2022 study of recency and frequency illusions in Dutch prescriptivism published in Languages, have found the picture messier than the tidy popular version suggests. That is a caveat about precision, not a reason to reach for a supernatural explanation instead.
Why this matters for anything you are tracking
If you are running a personal practice of any kind and trying to judge whether it is working, the frequency illusion is your primary source of false positives. Start a gratitude practice and you will notice more things to be grateful for, which is a genuine attentional change worth having. It is not evidence that more good things happened. Start reading an affirmation each morning and you will start noticing moments that fit it. That is the mechanism functioning normally, not a result.
The practical fix is unglamorous: decide in advance what you would expect to observe if the practice were doing nothing, and check for that too. The research on what separates affirmations that work from ones that produce nothing is useful here precisely because it draws that line, rather than treating every noticed coincidence as a confirmation.
