You see signs everywhere because your pattern-detection system is calibrated to over-detect, and at least four separate mechanisms stack on top of that calibration to make the output feel personal. The system is not malfunctioning. It is doing the thing it was built to do, slightly too eagerly, in an environment that supplies far more noise than the one it was tuned for. That is a different diagnosis than gullibility, and it points to a different remedy.
This matters because the usual conversation about signs runs in two unhelpful directions: one side treats the experience as evidence, the other treats the person having it as foolish. Neither is accurate. The experience is real, vivid, and well explained, and explaining it does not require thinking less of anyone.
Apophenia, and the word that replaced it
The German psychiatrist Klaus Conrad coined apophenia in 1958 to describe the unmotivated seeing of connections in the early stages of psychosis. The term escaped the clinic and now covers something broader and entirely ordinary: perceiving meaningful patterns in unrelated data. Peter Brugger, a neuropsychologist at University Hospital Zurich, spent much of his career on the non-clinical end of that spectrum, arguing that the tendency is continuously distributed across the healthy population rather than a category some people fall into.
Michael Shermer proposed the more usable label in Scientific American in 2008: patternicity, "the tendency to find meaningful patterns in meaningless noise." His argument for why the dial sits where it does is an argument from asymmetric cost. Mistaking a rustle in the grass for a predator when it was only wind costs you a little energy. Mistaking a predator for wind costs you everything. A detection system facing that payoff will evolve toward false positives, because false positives are survivable and false negatives are not.
Kevin Foster and Hanna Kokko formalized exactly this in 2009 in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, modeling when natural selection favors superstitious associations. Their result is that superstition-like behavior is expected whenever the cost of acting on a spurious association is low relative to the benefit of catching a real one. Believing in a pattern that is not there is not an error the system is trying to avoid. Under a wide range of conditions, it is the optimal setting.
Brugger's contribution: the dial has a position, and it can move
Brugger's line of work asked whether individual differences in pattern perception track something measurable. Peter Krummenacher, Christine Mohr, Helene Haker and Brugger published results in 2010 in the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience examining dopamine, paranormal belief, and the detection of meaningful stimuli. Healthy participants sorted by their belief in the paranormal differed in how readily they identified faint or degraded stimuli as meaningful, and administering a dopamine precursor altered the difference between the groups.
Two honest caveats. It is a small study, and pharmacological work on individual differences in perception has a mixed replication record. What it supports is modest and still interesting: pattern detection appears to have a neurochemically influenced setting rather than being a fixed property of a person. Someone who sees more signal than you do is not necessarily reasoning worse. They may be running the same computation at a different threshold.
Layer two: the frequency illusion
Once a thought is salient, related things appear to multiply. You start thinking about a move to Portland and Portland is suddenly everywhere. The linguist Arnold Zwicky named this the frequency illusion on Language Log, and he was explicit that it is built from two parts: selective attention, which makes you catch instances you would previously have let pass, and confirmation bias, which makes each one feel like confirmation.

Layer three: confirmation bias, which is a test-design problem
Signs are not tallied. That is the whole issue. If you are watching for confirmation that a decision is right, you will register the taxi with the meaningful license plate and you will not register the four hundred taxis that preceded it. Nothing dishonest occurred. The hits are memorable because they are meaningful; the misses are unmemorable by definition.
Raymond Nickerson's 1998 review in Review of General Psychology is the standard reference, and his framing is the useful one: confirmation bias is not primarily a motivated distortion but a default strategy of seeking confirming rather than disconfirming instances. It runs in scientists reviewing their own data and in doctors weighing a diagnosis. Applied to signs, it means the evidence you accumulate cannot distinguish between a world sending you messages and a world doing nothing, because you were only ever collecting one side of the ledger. Layer four: the Forer effect, or why the sign feels addressed to you
The last layer explains a specific quality of the experience: not just that the pattern is there, but that it seems meant for you.
Bertram Forer demonstrated it in 1949 in the Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology, in a classroom study he titled "The fallacy of personal validation." He gave students what they believed were individualized personality profiles derived from a test they had taken. Every student received the identical text, assembled from a newsstand astrology book. Asked to rate how well the profile described them on a scale of zero to five, the class averaged around 4.26. Almost nobody suspected anything.
The sentences that do this work share a structure. They are true of nearly everyone, they contain a flattering tension ("you have a great deal of unused capacity"), and they are vague enough that the reader supplies the specifics from their own life. That last part is the engine. You are not receiving a description. You are completing one, and the fit feels uncanny because you built it.
This is why a sign so often arrives with a sense of address. The ambiguous input is finished by the person interpreting it, using material only they have access to, which guarantees a good fit and makes the fit feel like proof of a sender.
The four layers, ranked by how much of the experience they explain
- Baseline patternicity. The largest contributor and the oldest. Your detection threshold is set below the level that pure accuracy would recommend, for good evolutionary reasons.
- Confirmation bias. Second largest, because it is what converts a lowered threshold into an accumulating case. Without a tally of misses, hits are uninterpretable.
- The Forer effect. Explains the personal quality specifically. Ambiguity plus self-supplied detail equals an uncanny fit.
- The frequency illusion. Smallest of the four but the most noticeable, because it has a distinct onset. It is the one that makes people say "this started happening the day I decided."
What to actually do with this
Not stop noticing. The noticing is not the problem, and trying to suppress a perceptual default is both unpleasant and unlikely to work.
The one adjustment worth making is to stop treating signs as feedback. A sign cannot tell you whether a decision is going well, because the sign rate is governed by your attention rather than by the decision.
